Dining For Change
Sharing, Caring & Daring to Make a Difference
October is Dining For Change Month
For photos from our fist event, click here! “NCA's Dining for Change is a grassroots fundraising initiative based on a new and growing model of localized charitable work called ‘giving circles'—groups of individuals networked with other small groups to make a difference,” explains NCA President Mark Goodman. “Our members told us they wanted more opportunities to connect locally and NCA's Dining for Change created that venue on their terms. We are so delighted that so many industry professionals accepted our dinner invitation. I am so proud of our NCA members, who by joining together on a local basis, raised more than $75,000 for our community service programs. That's the power of camaraderie!”

Beauty professionals across the country recently gathered at hundreds of dinners on a local level to network, share and enjoy one another's company as part of the National Cosmetology Association's (NCA) first Dining for Change. They also raised $75,000 for those impacted by breast cancer, domestic abuse and natural disasters. NCA members and industry pros, from manufacturers and distributors, to salon owners, stylists, educators and future professionals, met at elegant dinners, picnics, potlucks, pizza parties and more, while benefiting The Salons Against Domestic Abuse/CUT IT OUT, Look Good…Feel Better and the NCA Disaster Relief Fund. To continue the local camaraderie, NCA has designated October 2009 for the next get-togethers and encourages industry pros to hold their traditional breast cancer and domestic violence awareness/fundraising events under the Dining for Change banner.
“That you for giving us the outlet to give back,” said Lisa Magee, Omni SalonSpa in Zion , IL . “ It was a wonderful experience that I am proud to say I was a part of. Being together with colleagues and friends is irreplaceable. Together, WE can make a difference.”
Why did NCA launch this important grassroots initiative this year? Because of the economic conditions, it is projected that charitable giving in America will drop by as much as 60% this year. NCA members requested a program that would help them work together to support people in their personal and professional communities during their times of needs. Dining for Change came to life as a result.
Salon owners and beauty professionals across the country, including NCA Director and owner of Chicago's HairBase Salon and Day Spa Grace Santiler Nowik; the team at Paizley Salon and Spa in Cupertino, CA, and the team at Posh The Salon in Durham, NC, were joined by industry luminaries, including the Global Salon Business Awards' Paul Kent Meehan and Paul Mitchell's Angus Mitchell, whose dinner guests included Vidal and Ronnie Sassoon; Paul Mitchell's John Paul DeJoria, Paul Mitchell The School's Winn Claybaugh; Redken's Ann Mincey; Repechage's Lydia and David Sarfati, Emiliani's Don Emiliani and Paul Smith and Joico's Sara Jones, to make a difference.
