NCA Helps Members Become Heroes in their Community

The word “hero” conjures images of extraordinary circumstances and the incredible people who rise to meet them: firefighters in a blaze, ER surgeons in a busy ward. We, in the salon community, often wonder if we could ever match up to such valor.

Two programs in October prove that salon professionals can also be a hero to the clients they serve and many other women in their hometown, are the Look Good…Feel Better and CUT IT OUT community service programs, both co-sponsored by the National Cosmetology Association (NCA).

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Look Good…Feel Better is a free, non-medical, brand-neutral, national public service program founded in 1989 by The American Cancer Society, the Cosmetic, Toiletries and Fragrance Association (CTFA) and NCA. When a woman is undergoing radiation or chemotherapy treatments for cancer, the hardest part can be dealing with the changes she sees in the mirror every morning like hair loss or skin discoloration.

Look Good…Feel Better offers salon professionals the very unique opportunity to provide a support system for these women, who are already devoting so much of their strength to becoming cancer-free.

By participating in-group sessions on a weekly basis, volunteer salon pros ca reach out to local women in their communities to ease the pain of so many physical changes. The women are taught everything from styling wigs to make-up application tips all while finding empathy in each other and valuable lessons in the professionals who take the time to give back.

Because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is an excellent time for stylists to get involved and volunteer their services to this valuable program. Salon pros can get brochures to display in their salon or find other ways to become a part of Look Good…Feel Better, by visiting www.LookGoodFeelBetter.org or by calling 1(800)395-LOOK.

October is also Domestic Abuse Awareness Month

CUT IT OUT, a program of the Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund, is supported by NCA, Clairol Professional and Southern Living At HOME. It is dedicated to mobilizing salon professionals and others to fight the epidemic of domestic abuse in communities across the United States.

Salon pros have a very unique relationship with their clients in that they see them often enough to know them well but with enough time in between that they could be among the first to notice any changes or signs of abuse. CUT IT OUT helps raise awareness of domestic abuse by promoting the proper resources for victims or their friends and family.

It is free of cost for salon pros to put posters and brochures in their salon, and the potential to help is invaluable. CUT IT OUT offers salon professionals in-depth salon-specific awareness programs to recognize warning signs and safely refer clients to local resources.

Another facet of CUT IT OUT is the Adopt-a-Shelter Program that encourages salons to donate basic supplies to their local women’s shelter. The first step away from an abusive situation is undoubtedly the hardest, but there is a very long journey ahead for victims.

From shampoo and other personal care items to public transit passes and clothing, Adopt-a-Shelter is about getting abused women the basic tools they need to stand up for themselves and resume their lives in safety and promote a successful future.

To learn more about these programs visit www.CutItOut.org. To receive FREE materials for display in salons, pros can call 1-800-383-0210.
