NCA Disaster Relief Fund/Katrina Reaches $1 Million Mark!
On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana, forcing mass evacuations and destroying the lives of so many. Thousands of salon owners, stylists, nail technicians, estheticians, educators, students, school owners, salons and spas lost homes, salons and the ability to work.
Many of the industry’s associations immediately joined the hastily formed Beauty Associations for Katrina Relief coalition to mobilize the entire industry behind the NCA’s Disaster Relief Fund to allow for tax deductible donations – 100 percent of which would then be used to provide financial assistance to salon professionals in need.
One year later, August 26, 2006 has become a new milestone on the way to recovery. During BehindtheChair.com’s Stylist Choice Awards at Premiere Orlando Show, NCA Director Gordon Miller was speaking of the short distance left to the goal of one million dollars, when PureOlogy owners Jim and Cheryl Markham stood up to pledge the remaining $40,000+ it would take to get there. This generous gift offers more than much needed help to the beauty community in the gulf region. It is also a symbol of what can happen when an industry finds strength in its numbers.
Beauty Industry United to Help Its Own
Every penny of the funds raised has been or will be given away to salon professionals still trying to “Rebuild Beauty on the Gulf Coast.” More than 600 beauty professionals, once without hope, have received financial support from their contemporaries through the NCA Disaster Relief Fund/Katrina.
Many events, including the NCA’s First International Legends Ball, the PBA Beauty Ball & Charity Auction, IBS-New York, CMBS, and Intercoiffure have helped raise funds in the last year. In addition, significant corporate contributions have come from Aveda, , Chicago Midwest Beauty Show, IBS-NYC, Paul Mitchell , PureOlogy, Redken. and Sally Beauty Company to name but a few.
Most importantly, individual salon professionals including members of NCA, TSA, PBA, Intercoiffure and AACS have also pitched in with donations large and small.
NCA Disaster Relief Fund Continues
NCA will continue to raise funds for its NCA Disaster Relief Fund, which was established in the 1950’s to aid salon professionals affected by natural disasters. To raise funds for future disasters, The Second International Legends Ball will be held March 3, 2007 in Chicago, honoring industry Legends Robert Lobetta and Paul Mitchell, to benefit the NCA Disaster Relief Fund.
