NCA Presents A Volunteer Leader’s Point of View
Understanding salon professionals' needs because they are salon professionals themselves, members of the NCA Board of Directors share their thoughts on coming together, connecting on ideas, and the positive impact NCA has made on their lives.
Because there's strength in numbers, NCA can give back and protect our profession through legislative work, community service programs and career development. We asked the NCA Board of Directors to comment on NCA. Here's what they had to say:
Q: What brought you to NCA?
Marlene Bridge, NCA President
“A friend in the industry suggested I go to the NCA Convention in Washington. I'll always remember how welcome I felt among a group of perfect strangers. I've been here ever since and those strangers have turned into friends I will have for a lifetime.”
Sandi Holland, NCA Director
“I was introduced to NCA in 1967 while I was in cosmetology school. I was inspired by NCA member’s knack for getting the point across while having fun at the same time. Through my affiliation with NCA, I have been able to travel, meet fellow professionals and be exposed to the best education anywhere.”
Beth Hickey, NCA Director
“I believe in any profession it is our responsibility to belong to an association. There’s personal and professional strength with NCA – they are truly a source for information.”
Q: What NCA programs are most exciting and engaging to you?
Marlene Bridge, NCA President
“The recent SalonLife'06 event is freshest in my mind. Everything about SalonLife helped me learn and grow. You need to have balance in your life to be successful in any part of your life. Health, wealth and happiness are all intertwined together and when any one part is out of balance it effects how you act and react.”
Mark Goodman, NCA Vice President
“As a salon owner and licensed cosmetologist, the most important NCA program to me our legislative protection. NCA is really a watchdog for salon professionals.”
Graciela Santiler Nowik, NCA Secretary/Treasurer
“I love the new direction that NCA is taking – because it’s true – ‘There’s Strength in Numbers.’ In the past year, NCA has virtually reinvented themselves. NCA programs are about self-improvement, both technically and for your own personal well-being. NCA connects salon professionals like us with industry giants, making them accessible to us. They look after us all through legislative work and protect us from dangers that we probably never new existed.”
Sandi Holland, NCA Director
“I have enjoyed all NCA programs. The rewarding programs of Look Good...Feel Better which allows me to help appearance related side effects of chemotherapy, and CUT IT OUT, an awareness campaign that trains salon pros to recognize signs of domestic abuse, and offer information to help enhance one's life.”
Steven Lai, NCA Director
“I stand behind the potential and the importance of the NCA’s soon to be released Master Certification program which will be a resource for both hiring practices and individual professional development – as well as serving as a measurement tool for individuals and owners alike to evaluate strengths and weaknesses and make a plan for success.”
Q: How do you use your membership?
Marlene Bridge, NCA President
“I use my NCA membership to network with fellow salon professionals from around the country – and to save on show admissions, education, supplies and more. My membership allows me to see what’s new – and keeps me motivated and excited about the industry.”
Graciela Santiler Nowik, NCA Secretary/Treasurer
“My NCA membership is about my connection to the industry at large. That is to say, my networking community has widened to include prominent salon professionals and owners in the service business, and great contacts in the distribution and manufacturing beauty worlds. NCA allows me, a small independent businessperson, a way to stay competitive today.”
Q: What would you tell someone who was considering joining NCA?
Dr. Mark Lees, NCA Director
“As a true professional, you MUST join the largest professional cosmetology association in the USA. They represent and help protect you in legislative issues, and promote great events like Salon Life!”
Marlene Bridge, NCA President
“View your profession as your career. We need to stick together to have strength in numbers to protect our license.”
Graciela Santiler Nowik, NCA Secretary/Treasurer
“Join today! The new NCA is a multifaceted, well rounded and waiting to be used for your benefit. Get connected. NCA has a wealth of information to share with you. You just need to ask the questions, and they will help you.”
Beth Hickey, NCA Director
“Join an association whose #1 agenda is our profession. Because of that, NCA offers strong networking opportunities, access to resources within the industry, education, legislation and personal and professional growth.”
The National Cosmetology Association, NCA, cares most about what matters the most to salon professionals - finding satisfaction in their work, building a successful career, reaching out to others, and keeping our profession strong. These shared member values are the cornerstone in the success of the thousands of salon professionals who have been a part of the NCA community since 1921.
Call for Nominations – NCA Delegates
At the NCA's Annual Business Meeting, members Delegates have the responsibility to approve the NCA annual budget and past year's audit, set membership dues, and elect officers. Chosen by a blue ribbon committee of NCA members, the primary responsibility of NCA Delegates is to represent the broader interests of the membership. Similar to the US Senate, the Delegate body is made up of two representatives from each state who come together annually to discuss the future of the association, consider the past year's accomplishments and challenges, and to elect leadership to insure continued success.
Current NCA Members may nominate qualified NCA members (or themselves) to serve as Delegates to NCA’s 87th Annual Delegate Session on Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the Marriott O’Hare Hotel in Chicago, IL. For further information go to www.ncacares.org or call the NCA office at 312-527-6765.
