NCA Surveys Salon Professionals: State of Economy Is Troubling for Business

In a recent online survey of industry professionals conducted by the National Cosmetology Association, salon pros were asked how current economic factors are impacting their businesses. The majority of respondents said the economy was making their work life difficult in one or more areas.

Of those surveyed, 67 percent of salon professionals revealed a decline in business; while 45 percent admit that business is significantly down compared to the same time last year.

While the survey indicates several factors that have contributed to a decline in business, most respondents say that increased prices at the gas pump are triggering financial problems in the workplace.

Respondents say increased gas prices are causing customers to opt for fewer chemical services, while also spending less on retail products. Additionally, unemployment and an overall uncertainty of the economic in the future are causing consumers to commit to fewer salon visits, leaving salon professionals to feel the effect in their pockets.

Additionally, gas prices are causing shipping and wholesale prices to climb, the survey revealed.

Although current numbers are down in some areas, those surveyed say they expect holiday spending to be about the same or only slightly down from last year. Additionally, those that expect the holiday season to be less profitable in comparison also say that they are not overly concerned with what is to come.
