NCA Honors Distinguished Members

The National Cosmetology Association (NCA) hosted a very special Americas’ Banquet on Friday, February 25, 2005, in celebration of the association’s 85th Annual Convention.

NCA President Josephine Zeppieri served as host for the evening, welcoming NCA’s Board of Directors, Americas’ Educators, State Leaders, members and guests. Among the dignitaries in attendance were: Salvatore Fodera, World President of Organization Mondiale Coiffure (OMC); and international representatives of OMC; Look Good…Feel Better partners; NCA President’s Advisory Council and EstheticsAmerica Leadership Council members and NCA’s distinguished honorees of the evening—the recipients of the Pillar, Hall of Renown, Charles and Edna L. Emme International Medallion Awards.

“Tonight is the perfect opportunity to recognize our members with special honors for their lifetime achievements on the national and international hairdressing scene,” said Zeppieri. “Truly one of NCA’s most respected ambassadors of goodwill to the world, and a role model to us all, is NCA’s own Diane Sherrill White, recipient of tonight’s Edna L. Emme International Medallion,” said Zeppieri, on giving out the first of the awards of the evening on behalf of NCA.

The Pillar of Leadership Awards
Establishment of the new NCA Pillar of Leadership Awards, to be awarded every two years, gave President Zeppieri a special opportunity to honor four distinguished members and colleagues at the Banquet for their lifelong contributions to the association’s core values of Community Service, Creativity, Education and Legislative Initiatives. The Pillar Award of Leadership in Creativity was presented to Buddy Walton of St. Louis, MO for his activity in international competition and hairdressing creativity; The Pillar of Leadership in Legislative Initiatives recognized David Bagwell of North Carolina for his continued efforts on behalf of salon professional in state and national legislation; the Pillar Award of Community Service went to Rose Reynolds for her work with the Look Good…Feel Better program; and the Pillar Award of Leadership in Education was presented to Leo Passage, founder of Pivot Point International, Inc.

NCA Inducts Two Into Hall of Renown
By special proclamation, the Board of Directors and the members of the National Cosmetology Association inducted two Americas’ members into the NCA Hall of Renown. The Hall of Renown is one of NCA’s most prestigious honors and presented in recognition of a lifetime of outstanding achievements as professional educators. This year’s recipients are Dr. Mark Lees and Sue Wahl, each long time Americas’ Educators who have made significant contributions to the professional salon industry.

Charles Award For Community Leadership
Vilma Cobb, representing the state of South Carolina, received the coveted Charles Award, named for early NCA leaders Charles Godefroy and Charles M. Koslay, The Charles Award recognizes the NCA member who best represents the contribution of salon professionals in their communities. The criteria for the Charles Award for Community Leadership include: participation in and contributions toward the advancement of the cosmetology profession, participation in the NCA activities on all levels, and participation in educational, civil, social welfare and fundraising programs.

Americas’ Service Award Recipients At the banquet, NCA honored its Americas’ members—the educators of the association responsible for teaching classes and seminars to its members in their local areas as well as to other affiliates and states to provide the latest in education for all members. The following Americas’ members received awards for their dedication and service:

    5-Year Service: Christy Casey; Millie Moser; Steven Porter; Patty Sterling; and Eiko Morito Studier.
    10-Year Service: Tahereh Benscoter; Karlabeth Beste; Jean Boss; Catherine Bracht; Terry Chrisco; Bea DeRoss; Gary Fast; Barbara Gutuskey; Madrid Johnson; Tom Kechejian; Kristopher Kutcher; and Mario Stephen Rella.
    15-Year Service: Marlene Bridge; Marci Curtin; Beth Davidson; Allen Furlan; Jocelyn Johnson; Dennis Miller; Denice Ogburn; Douglas Overfield; and Carol Winberg.
NCA congratulated the following members for their dedication to the association, for 30-Year Service Jo Ann Stills and Diane Sherrill White; 35-Years Service John Desiderio; 40-Year Service Leo Passage and James Viar; and 50-Years Service Buddy Walton.

More Events and Awards at the 85th Convention The Look Good…Feel Better Sunrise Award Winners for 2004 were honored at a special luncheon hosted by NCA on February 24, 2005, for serving as outstanding volunteers in their community. The 2004 Sunrise Award recipients include: Susan Haines, NCA member and Look Good…Feel Better (LGFB) certified volunteer cosmetologist from Columbia, MO; Jamie Burleigh, LGFB certified volunteer cosmetologist from Gonzales, LA and Pam DiDente, a trained nurse, LGFB certified volunteer and a breast cancer survivor from Bend, OR.

Exclusive to NCA members at the Convention, were two full days of education and inspiration on Friday and Saturday, February 25-26, 2005. A Spring/Summer Hands-on Workshop entitled, “Mechanics of Emotion” was presented by the Pivot Point International Artistic Team, and a two-part series for nail and esthetics professionals on anti-aging treatments and custom spa services was taught by Beth Hickey, EOH Beauty Brands.

In addition, more than 200 NCA members took part in an all-day “Lessons for Success” educational program on Saturday featuring three of the industry’s leading educators.
