NCA Honors Look Good…Feel Better® Volunteers
Susan Haines, NCA member and Look Good…Feel Better (LGFB) certified volunteer cosmetologist from Columbia, Missouri, was awarded the 2004 National Sunrise Award at a special luncheon hosted by NCA at the association’s 85th Annual Convention.
Inspired by her sister who was battling cancer at the same time she joined the program, Haines promised that she would work to make LGFB available to all women facing cancer treatment in Missouri. Now, sixteen years later, Haines continues to work tirelessly for LGFB, giving her time and talent in the role of both volunteer and trainer at local, state and national levels of the program.
Haines was responsible for bringing Look Good…Feel Better in October 2002 and 2003 to the Governor’s Mansion during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in order to raise awareness about the program. “If I can improve the life of one woman who is suffering, and can use my talent and training to encourage others to make a difference in a woman’s life," says Haines, “then I am keeping the promise I made to my sister.”
The national Look Good…Feel Better Sunrise Awards have been given annually since 1994, and are awarded to those who have served as outstanding volunteers for the program in their community. Jamie Bourgeois, a volunteer cosmetologist from Gonzales, Louisiana, and Pam DiDente, a LGFB volunteer, trained nurse and breast cancer survivor from Bend, Oregon, have also been selected as winners of the 2004 LGFB Sunrise Award.
Susan Haines, Jamie Bourgeois and Pam DiDente are three wonderful examples of the quality of LGFB volunteers who, donating more than 30,000 hours each year, are largely responsible for the program’s success. They will now become part of an elite group of previously recognized National Sunrise Award winners.
Look Good…Feel Better, a free public service program which began in 1989, is designed to teach women hands-on beauty techniques using skin care and makeup products donated by the cosmetic industry to help restore their appearance and self-image during treatment. The program, offered throughout the US in partnership with the American Cancer Society, the National Cosmetology Association and the cosmetic industry, now serves over 43,000 women each year.
