NCA to Launch Master Certification Program

According to a recent Internet survey conducted by the National Cosmetology Association, salon professionals ranked professional development and certification of skills and knowledge as critical to succeeding in today’s highly competitive salon world.

It’s this ranking of importance that spurred the association to approve development of a national program—open to all in the salon industry—that confirms to the world the degree of skill and knowledge that a salon professional has achieved.

This new NCA Master Certification Program—a “professional measuring stick” for the industry—will recognize those who attain advanced levels of proficiency by meeting specific success criteria.

“State Board examinations offer a much needed, entry-level, ‘certification’ of the skills and knowledge needed to protect the safety and health of clients,” said NCA Executive Director Gordon Miller. “What the licensing examination does not do is measure the competencies required for long term success in the marketplace.”

To help provide a resource for both hiring practices as well as benchmarks for individual professional development, the NCA Board of Directors has approved the creation of a national Master Certification Program. NCA will work with a variety of resources within the industry as well certification specialists to create separate programs for experienced hairdressers, estheticians and nail technicians.

“Professional certification is available in most true professions,” said NCA President Josephine Zeppieri. “Because NCA’s mission is to ensure professionalism and create career success with integrity, certification is another important way NCA will take a leadership role in the industry.”

The NCA’s Master Certification Program will officially launch in 2006. For additional information, salon professionals can contact the NCA office at 312-527-6765, email nca1@ncacares.org or visit www.ncacares.org.
