Retail - the Economic Bailout for Salons

Challenging times demand creative, new approaches to tackle problems and inspire change.

NCA invites you to be part of a massive, concerted national effort to inspire change in how salons view their relationship with the bottles that too often gather dust on the shelf. Simple, proven solutions kick starting sales will forge a new attitude around the value of retailing.

While many are wringing their hands over the economy, NCA is stepping up to the plate with solutions.

With our bold new initiative, we will challenge salons to look at retail in a new way — as the key to long term success in the face of a challenging economy.

Bottom-up approach

Together we will challenge over 50,000 salons — 25% of the US market — to increase their retail sales by just $50 a day.

The math is astounding…

  • $50 per day in new retail sales translates to $12,500
per year in new sales for one salon.
  • That’s an industry gain of over $600 million dollars in
    new retail sales.

If we up the ante by adding $50 per day per stylist per salon…

  • The average salon will add $150 per day in new retail sales.
  • That means $1.8 billion in new sales industry-wide!

Grow the 25% salon base to 50% of all salons and we’ll add over $3.6 billion in new sales! These are daunting numbers but achievable given a new grassroots approach to a very old problem.

Retail can become the driver for success at a time when salons will need it the most.

We’re developing an all industry campaign creating a new kind of“dialogue” about success and its connection to retailing.

We will create a bottom up, grassroots approach to inspire retail success (adding to the ongoing top down push from manufacturers
through distributors to an ever smaller salon demographic via DSCs).

The time is now for salons to shift their focus from thinking of product in the context of “makes hair shiny and adds volume” (a service only orientation) to one of profitability (a true business orientation).

It’s time for salons to move beyond the issue of diversion and focus on the power of retail to transform salons by creating both wealth and opportunity, for increased education, staff retention, client loyalty and personal gain.

And, it’s time to move past the limitations of the current store-centric distribution model to better serve salons by encouraging a new vision of the potential of retailing success to change lives.

What will be your company’s share of this new business? Join the NCA and its national campaign to inspire change in salons.

Imagine a $600 million infusion of cash into salons in 2009! How about $1.8 billion in new retail sales?

$50 a Day? YES WE CAN!

Translating the value of retail into tangible tools salons can use. With help from you and other industry partners, NCA will create:

  1. An Industry-wide Marketing Campaign Promoting the ultimate value of retail to salon owners andprofessionals — economic empowerment through increased profitability.
    • Monthly inserts into leading publications plus a significant online presence focused on inspiring salons to use growth in retail as a key to beating the recession and building long-term success.
    • Each insert will feature a case study, benchmarking information and a step-by-step, easy-to-implement guide to creating a simple yet successful long-term retail program.
  2. A Grassroots “Salon Retailers Network” Promoting role models or “retail heroes” to share real world
examples to inspire success among their peers.
    • We must recognize “levels” of retail expertise and focus — so that salons can, regardless of size or experience, be part of a nationwide program that they can relate to and grow with. Importantly, our goal is to support incremental growth in a way that serves the needs of salons and professionals at various levels of experience and commitment.
  3. A Robust Online Repository of easy-to-use proven tools, benchmarks and best-practice systems to help build
    retail success.
    • Built with input from the best retailing minds the industry has to offer, we will use the Internet to further
push out a strong, ongoing message of economic empowerment rooted in strong retail sales, inclusive of a
variety of forums for engagement, feedback and support.
  4. A Grassroots Support System of education, inspiration and motivation using existing industry events to help
    create and sustain momentum.
    • Through a series of live workshops, panels and case studies directly connected to print and online resources,we’ll to bring to life the power of retail profits to change salons for the better.

NCA strongly believes that retail remains the great untapped profit stream for most salons — and the best solution to the economic crisis at hand.

The difference between successful salons and those who continue to struggle is, without a doubt, the high profits associated with retail sales. However, this important message simply is not getting through to those who need it most— the independent salons that are the foundation of the professional salon industry in America today.

Our industry is very much at the crossroads. We can do nothing and watch companies and salons fail in the coming year. We can do things as they’ve always been done and stand by as record numbers of traditional salons and their employees transition to booth renters and into kitchens.

Or we can act – together – to create a new understanding of how to do business in a changing economy.
