Mary Rector-Gable is the founder and president of behindthechair.com. Launched in 2000, BTC is the world's largest community website for salon professionals. More than 800,000 visitors log on to the website monthly, from more than 90 countries.
In 2002, Rector-Gable created the BTC Stylist Choice Awards, which has become the most prestigious distinction for professional beauty products, educators, events and manufacturers. In 2007, Rector-Gable joined forces with hairdressing icon Vidal Sassoon and created Hairdressers Unlocking Hope, a fundraising initiative to build homes for displaced Hurricane Katrina victims. Through her industry-wide efforts, which included a groundbreaking photo campaign involving dozens of high profile hairstylists worldwide, HUH raised more than $2.0 million to build more than 22 homes in the New Orleans area. For these and other humanitarian efforts, she has received special awards from TIGI Hair Care and the National Cosmetology Association (NCA.)
In 2007, Rector-Gable served as consulting producer for the premiere season of BRAVO-TV's “Shear Genius,” a reality competition for hairstylists. In that capacity, she was instrumental in conducting nationwide casting calls, selecting judges and creating the show's challenges. She was also responsible for securing Vidal Sassoon as a surprise guest judge in the show's finale.
An entrepreneur with unprecedented vision, Rector-Gable has been profiled in Business Week, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune and Entrepreneur Magazine . She is currently working on her next venture - whodoesyourhair.com. This innovative online salon finder and professional beauty guide for salon clients is scheduled to launch in April of 2008.
